Building a firebox for hot smoking

What can you imaginative folks out there in hot-smoker land recommend for either building or getting built a decent firebox?

Take a welding course at the junior college?

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it probably needs more time on the grill! :D

Yup. They're saying "Quack! Quack! Chortle chortle chortle." (feeding call)

I knew a feller that said the best chittlins would sometimes have a kernel or two of corn in them.

I know its an old post but I'll chime in a little.

What's your budget? If you've only smoked 20 times and the firebox burned up already then, sorry to say, its junk. Luckily you're in the hill country and short drive to Houston. Look up Gator pits. http://www.gatorpit.net/ That's just one of many in the Houston area that I can recommend. They're totally custom and build to any specs you want or chose from their designs. I've seen them in action and they're great quality.

If you don't line the fire box with cast iron or fire bricks you should expect it to burn out. No self respecting stove builder uses steel for the lining of a firebox.
