Nick, see if you can get a sheetmetal man to make a couple of narrow galvanized angles about a foot and half long to support the block above the smoke pipe. You will feel better about it that way. Looking very promicing already.

Ross, I definitly need to do something like that. I saw a similar design online that had a square frame that went around the pipe and fit the square hole.
Also, Im trying to decide whether or not I should put a ceiling inside the smokehouse at the base of the angled roof Im going to build. It would be less area to heat, but not sure if that would make that much of a difference.

If you make the ceiling of loosely laid boards you can have the flexibility. For the block support even a section of drywall corner bead would be enough.

Do you guys have any idea how long I should make the pipe from the firebox to the smokehouse? I have an idea what I think will work but Im open to suggestions. Keep in mind that I will be hot smoking up to about 180, but would also like to be able to cold smoke if I can, by controlling temps with fire size, dampers, vents.

Nick, my vertical pipe is about six feet, I keep a very small fire and the smoke house temperature rise is about 10°F when the air temperature is about 45°F.

Probably loose more heat that way and your pipe is much larger. At the upper end of my pipe it is cool to my touch.

nick, my pipe is 6' long ,5" diameter and almost horizontal and I can get er up over 225° no problem at all.orf...
