Those are nice pictures but I don't know what you are planning to do with this new high tech piece of equipment. I don't know if you built it or if you purchased it. I couldn't read a brand name. I am glad for you that you have this.

I built it myself for less than $ 100.00. I plug my hotplate into it and control the temperature of the smoke chamber. I can hot or cold smoke with it.

That is great, if you could post the details and a schematic it would be wonderful. A list of the parts would also be good. This could be used to control the temperature of a poaching bath on an electric heat source. And save the hunt for an old electric roaster.

Here is the PID controller I bought off of EBay for $ 39.00

http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-OFF-Digital- ... 336e01fa33

Here is a basic schematic. I added two outlet receptacles that are controlled by the solid state switch and a 3rd outlet that is on all the time to run a fan or some other device. The enclosure is one I picked up at an electronic shop. It has a metal backplate to mount the SSR on. You need some sort of metal back plate or a heat sink to dissipate the heat from the SSR. Below is the schematic.

I am afraid that I couldn't build one from that diagram.

Ross, if you go look at the ebay listing he posted and look at the different pictures it will become clear.

I'm thinking I'm going to purchase one myself...

Hi Allen: If you buy one of these kits, I suggest that you get a PT100 probe like the one in this link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Temperature-Con ... 1c1db63f14
Its more suitable to a smoker than the ones that come with the kit. Ask the vendor if they can substitute one like this. If you need any assistance, let me know. It is not difficult.

That makes it all very clear. The contrast for the links makes them difficult to see and I think that I missed them. This just a modular system that only needs an enclosure.

Bert,
Thanks for the heads up!
I do building automation for a living, so I should be able to handle it ;-) I do appreciate the offer though.
This option is MUCH cheaper than going with one of our controllers and sensors. Probably just as accurate as well. Thanks again for posting this info.

No problem Allen: I am sure you will not have any problems with your background. This thing really works well! Once the you set the desired temp., the PID produces an algorithm in its ram and will maintain a very tight temp control.
Good luck with it.

I order my PID and SSR and temp probe on line at Amazon. No waiting on US Customs!
I should be getting everything hooked up and running next week. Bert Has been a Great help. I can't wait.
