Thermoworks PH meter

Post by rgauthier20420 » Mon Feb 23, 2015 15:45

So I'd like to get a pH meter, but a Hanna is just out of the price range. Can anyone comment to this ThermoWorks meter?

Rg-
I Am sure that would work fine but you will need to make an emulsion to test the Ph of meat, which works just fine. If you want another option in a similar price range that you can upgrade to a meat/cheese probe at a later date I would look to something like this Milwaukee. http://www.sausagemaker.com/11213milwaukeephmeter.aspx

Be aware that the meat probe will cost more than the meter but you can get replacement electrodes at a reasonable cost

I agree with Bob. I would buy a meter with a BNC connector and then you will have numerous options for probes, now or later. If you buy the thermoworks let us know how it works. I've wondered how those types of meters handle the fat from the meat which does tend to stick to the probe.

I have glass probe on my Milwaukee (not the meat/cheese probe) They recommend a warm water soap solution soak or squirt with acetone from a squeeze bottle to clean fat residue.

Good to know. I have one of those. I noticed the instructions tell you how to calibrate the meter, but not how often. Do you need to calibrate this every time you use it?

Yes . That is what is recommended by Milwaukee.

I have the Hanna and they say once a month. Since I don't use it once a month I cal. it everytime I use it. It takes like 5 minutes and is very simple to do.

That's kind of what I thought. Can get expensive as the calibration solutions are a little pricey.

Not that expensive Lance. Go to a hydroponics store and buy a couple of bottles. The solutions will last you a long time. You don't dump it out every time you use it.
